This exhibition explores the contrast between our aspirations and the world in which we live. We invite viewers to reflect on the ways in which our expectations shape our perception of reality, and how reality, in turn, influences the nature of our dreams.
The title itself serves as a key to unlocking multiple layers of interpretation within the exhibited works.
- One might contemplate the role of the artist: Are they meant to be a voice of the present, or to create imagined, idealized worlds?
- Should art serve to beautify reality, or instead reveal its flaws with uncompromising clarity?
- Alternatively, is the artist free of any obligation, with art existing purely to offer viewers the freedom of their own interpretations?
"Between Dreams and Reality" invites a comparison between the post-Soviet experiences of Riga's audience and those of the Armenian artists featured in this exhibition.
Additionally, the exhibition presents the works of residents from ArtQuarter, a non-commercial collective of artists located in the heart of Yerevan. These artists have constructed a world governed by their own principles, which are as inspiring as their creations. In this exhibition, we sought to preserve the unique atmosphere of their studios and their ongoing artistic explorations. Much like many Latvian artists, Armenian creators work independently of the global art scene’s "big game." The aim of the exhibition, therefore, is not only to introduce a new cultural perspective but also to challenge long-held myths about art, dismantle invisible barriers, and, ultimately, to reveal art’s ability to express uncompromising freedom and courage.
