Just like Krišjānis Valdemārs’ nameplate on his dormitory door in Tartu during his student years, so too does the slightly tipsy hockey fan’s cap on a flight to Tampere proudly bear the inscription “Latvietis” (Latvian).
The theme of national identity is always relevant. The collective memory of Latvians is shaped by scars, many of which still sting, yet they serve as a reminder for us to stand together despite our differences.
The Bible in Latvian, the Cabinet of Folksongs, the Freedom Fights, the Awakening, a sweater, a tattoo on the lower back or behind the lip with the word “Latvietis” – all of these make me rejoice. Because thanks to the collective cooperation and willpower of the Latvian people, I am here today – in a free Latvia.
